1. Automating a broken process

Invisible automation is untrusted automation. If you cannot see what happens when a flow gets stuck somewhere, finding the error takes hours. Good automation has an interface: steps are observable, errors are visible and intervention is possible.

3. Forgetting the exceptions

The real world does not flow neatly. Missing data, unexpected input or a failed step always happen. An automation that does not design for exceptions from the start silently produces the wrong result at the first hiccup — and that is the most dangerous kind of mistake.

4. Going live without testing

  • Before going live, automation should be tried end to end with a copy of real data.
  • Expected and unexpected scenarios should be tested together.
  • In the early days, the output should be verified by hand to earn trust.

5. Leaving it without a handover

If no one but the builder knows how the automation works, the system stops at the first problem. Documentation and a short training take the automation out of being person-dependent.
